It’s not that much of a secret that I have a boner for health food. I’ve always wanted to try a proper green smoothie, but based on my experience making them, you really need a vitamix or other zillion dollar high powered blender to make them so that they come out like smoothies instead of some kind of unappetizing chunky kale soup. As a result, I’ve pretty much given up on making a green smoothie (along with tons of other recipes) until I’m rich enough to afford a Vita-Mix.
Then I watched the documentary Fat Sick & Nearly Dead. If you haven’t seen it, it’s about a man with several health problems that goes on a juice cleanse for 60 days, with surprising results. I’d also heard that Crazy Sexy Diet (which I have not read yet, but its on my to-do list) had a lot about green juice in it so I was dying to try it.
Juicers are way cheaper than the Vita-Mix, and my dad happens to have one so I went ahead and borrowed his to make myself green juice every morning all summer while I was staying with my parents. I have yet to brave a juice cleanse, for now I just drink it for breakfast… But someday!
I cycle between three different juice recipes that I use when I make my juice. I weigh out the amount of greens when I make them because I’m obsessed with portion sizes, but if you’re lazier than I am you can just add the greens to taste. The first two recipes make enough to fill a large glass as seen in the above photo. That’s one serving if you’re me, or two normal people servings.
Green Juice #1
- 100g Kale
- 1 Cucumber
- 4 Celery Stalks
- 2 Green Apples
- 1/2 a Lemon, peeled
- 1 two-inch piece of ginger
This is the basic green juice recipe from “Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead”, which I modify slightly to have more kale. It tastes okay, not as good as the recipe below.
Amazing Golden Delicious Green Juice
- 50g spinach
- 50g kale
- 2 Golden Delicious Apples
- 25g Parsley
- 1 lemon, peeled
- 1 Cucumber
This is also from “Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead” – its the best juice recipe ever! Unlike the previous one, this is completely 100% delicious. I think its the golden apples that make the difference. I make this one a lot more than I make the other one, I admit.
Mini Green Juice
- 50g kale
- 4 celery stalks
- 2 small limes
- 2 small golden delicious apples, or one huge whole foods sized one
Here’s a recipe I came up with! I love it. Sometimes if I don’t want a whole glass of the big juices, I will make this mini version instead, which makes about half the normal amount.
Now that it’s getting so cold out here at home, I find myself turning to more warm breakfasts, like oatmeal and stuff, but making this post makes me miss the juice. I really have to get a juicer of my own!
